First lady Ginger Beebe speaks at CARTI luncheon
DEB PETERSON • Bulletin Staff Writer • May 7, 2009
Beebe spoke to 220 women Wednesday at the sold-out "Splash into Spring" Mother's Day luncheon and fashion show hosted by Central Arkansas Radiation Therapy Institute at Big Creek Golf & Country Club.
The annual luncheon, now in its third year, is proving to be a major fundraising event for CARTI. It brought in $17,000 last year, all of which stayed in the Mountain Home CARTI facility.
"We already have that much in sponsorship," said Gayla Thompson, CARTI Community Outreach Chairman.
Proceeds from the seven items auctioned live at the event increased that amount by $3,000, and the sale of 90 silent auction items hadn't yet been totaled.
"New this year," said Thompson, "are the parties."
Three parties were auctioned, including a pool party for 10 children hosted by Kathryn and Joe Miles, a wine and cheese party offered by Danny and Barbara Williams, and a candlelight cocktail party donated by Mike and Gayla Thompson. The wine and cheese party went for $700. A necklace from Carter's Jewel Chest, a two-night stay at White River Inn, an original painting by Duane Hada and a tan and white Shih Tzu also were auctioned.
The personal side
"This has been the most fun," Beebe said when she spoke after the auction. "CARTI holds a special place in my heart because my aunt used CARTI in Little Rock back in 1988. I am always in awe of them. They are always searching for new technology. We are so fortunate to have it in our state."
Karla Green of Bull Shoals, a registered nurse in the intensive care unit at Baxter Regional Medical Center, gives CARTI similar glowing marks from her own personal experience. Green was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2007.
"I opted to stay in Mountain Home for treatment because I felt they offered excellent care," Green said.
For six weeks, Green had radiation treatments at CARTI five days a week.
She found the CARTI staff prompt, caring, always very respectful and conscientious of her time. She was in and out in 30 minutes every time.
"It's a wonderful place to go," she said. "I don't think you could find any better care anywhere else."
Barbara Williams, who has served on the CARTI board for three years, recognized Katrina Clements, facility director at CARTI in Mountain Home, as one of the many caring people on the staff.
"Cancer is scary, and it's scary walking through those doors," Williams said. "Katrina will meet you at the door with a smiling face and a very, very big heart. She is the glue of the CARTI facility."
Williams is a two-time survivor of cancer herself and feels very fortunate to be alive and involved with CARTI.
"From a cancer survivor's perspective," she said, "events like this are important because you get information and many survivors attend. It's a chance to celebrate them, and women currently going through treatment can look around the room, hear survivors talk about their experience and see that there is hope.
"It's an upbeat couple of hours when they don't have to worry about anything."
Eleanor Stein, a member of the "Splash into Spring" committee, knows firsthand about the encouragement cancer patients provide each other. She was a CARTI patient in 2001 when she had breast cancer. There was a woman in her 70s who always had the appointment after Stein and was being treated for facial cancer. Treatment required that she wear a wire mask that scared her.
"I can't do it," she said to Stein one day.
"I told her, 'You just close your eyes and think of the most beautiful place you can imagine, and you go there,' " Stein recalled.
The luncheon was dedicated to the memory of Stein's husband, Joe, who died of cancer in February, and to John Eric Wham, who died in March.

May is for Moms
WHY I LOVE MOM

Mom and Dad were watching TV when Mom said, 'I'm tired, and it's getting late. I think I'll go to bed'. She went to the kitchen to make sandwiches for the next day's lunches. Rinsed out the popcorn bowls, took meat out of the freezer for supper the following evening, checked the cereal box levels, filled the sugar container, put spoons and bowls on the table and started the coffee pot for brewing the next morning. She then put some wet clothes in the dryer, put a load of clothes into the washer , ironed a shirt and secured a loose button. She picked up the game pieces left on the table, put the phone back on the charger and put the telephone book into the drawer She watered the plants, emptied a wastebasket and hung up a towel to dry. She yawned and stretched and headed for the bedroom. She stopped by the desk, wrote a note to the teacher, counted out some cash for the field trip, and pulled a text book out from hiding under the chair. She signed a birthday card for a friend, addressed and stamped the envelope and wrote a quick note for the grocery store. She put both near her purse.
Dad called out, 'I thought you were going to bed.'
'I'm on my way,' she said.
She put some water into the dog's dish then made sure the doors were locked and the patio light was on. Mom then washed her face with 3 in 1 cleanser, put on her Night solution & age fighting moisturizer, brushed and flossed her teeth and filed her nails. She looked in on each of the kids and turned out their bedside lamps and TV's , hung up a shirt, threw some dirty socks into the hamper, and had a brief conversation with the one up still doing homework. In her own room, she set the alarm ; laid out clothing for the next day, straightened up the shoe rack. She added three things to her 6 most important things to do list. She said her prayers, and visualized the accomplishment of her goals.
About that time, Dad turned off the TV and announced to no one in particular. 'I'm going to bed,' and he did.
Dont forget your Mom on Mothers Day!!!

The case of the mistaken boat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You have to laugh at this for sure....A friend of the family asked Eva Lauren is she would like to clean up his pontoon boat. She agreed so today I took her down to the dock to get things started for her. The boat was really dirty and I didn't think that Burt would ever had let his boat get that dirty..I helped her get started and then left her to finish up the job... She cleaned a few more hours before it was finished.. Well when Burt got off work he called and asked how it went? As we are talking we realize that she had cleaned the wrong boat!!!!! Some one will get a real nice surprise when they come to see their boat to find it all clean, vacuumed and shining like new!!(LOL). Now she just needs to clean Burt's boat and all will be well...Oh well maybe someone needed a little blessing!!,wish i could be a duck on the dock and see the reaction when the owners show up!!!

look how beautiful my peonies are!!! the smell so good!!!

Darrell's app with the Dr yesterday was pretty gross!!! He unwrapped his hand and we saw how bad it really is. It made me so nauseated,,, for heavens sake I'm a nurse, and see worse things than that everyday but I cant handle seeing his hand like that!!!!We see the specialist in two weeks!!I know that this will take a long time to heal and when it does they will put the artificial joint(knuckle) in his middle finger!!! yuck, yuck,,
He is doing better, but his hand is so swollen and he is still in so much pain!!He is wanting to go back to work but I don't think that will happen anytime soon..
I'm so thankful that it wasn't MORE SERIOUS !!!!He is kinda looking at this as a warning to slow down and not take so many risk!!!
my petunias are blooming!!!
and remember what is important

I love my Daddy....
Today was the prettiest day of the year no doubt!!! Darrell and I went down to the houseboat to do some more painting and realized that it was to nice of a day to stay on the dock, so we found a little cove with no wind and fished and worked.. Daddy had an eye exam this morning but came out after his appointment.. He got within 200 yard from us and ran out of gas!!! He was using his trolling motor to come toward us... i thought he was fishing!!!! To make a long story short by the time we got gas out of our boat and into his it was quite an ordeal!!! poor guy has the worse luck of all... I cant stand to see him getting older,, but I'm so glad that he is here and enjoying his life!!! When he got back from the boat dock full of gas he had the best time!!! He said that he never did anything easy and that he had to work twice as hard to do anything. He laughs and jokes all the time...He is really enjoying his retirement!!!! I am too!!! I love him so much!!!

Martha Washington said.............
"The greatest part of our happiness and misery depends on our dispositions and not our circumstances."
Just thought you might like that!!
Today was a very busy day filled with lots of spring cleaning,, not at home, but on the house boat!!! I cant believe how everything can get so dirty over the winter months. Every spring we have to work at least two or three days cleaning, shampooing, and painting. Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining!!! Guess what I'm doing tomorrow???? YEP more of the same.
In just a few more weeks we will be using it every day,,I'm really looking forward to this summer. Last summer was such a blurr,,,I had just finished my chemo and wasn't really feeling like hanging out on the lake. The water level is perfect this year, so look out here we come!!!
